Americas Cup World Series San Francisco: Saturday Highlight Reel

America's Cup World Series: Coutts Crash

Who says sailboat racing is boring? Plenty of fast-paced action off the San Francisco waterfront today, including one smashing smash-up by Oracle Racing's Russell Coutts. Are the boss's reaction times slowing down with age?

Now that's getting boxed out! Russell Coutts crashes into the race committee boat during the third fleet race of the America's Cup World Series in San Francisco on the third day of racing.

America's Cup: Emirates Airborne Again

by Dave Reed

Emirates Team New Zealand capsizes during the practice race of the America's Cup World Series San Francisco, incurring minor damage.

Emirates Team New Zealand planted their wing in San Francisco Bay, joining a host of other teams this week learning how far to push in the windy conditions.

The last time Dean Barker and his teammates on Emirates Team New Zealand capsized their AC45 (in Newport in June) the ensuing drama of righting the boat from its bows-to-the-sky position proved more entertaining than the capsize itself. It was an experience that Barker admitted he'd soon rather forget.

Is Hell Freezing Over? Moondust Might Race

by Tim Zimmermann

Tim Zimmermann's Beneteau 36.7 Moondust was purchased with cruising in mind, but she might just get to the starting line this coming year.

I used to be one of those sailors who believed deeply in racing ... other people’s boats, especially when it came to big boats. Racing your own boat seemed like such a hassle (organizing and provisioning for lots of crew), as well as a potentially voracious, money-sucking, black hole (new sails, bottom jobs, and divers, just to name a few). So the biggest boat I ever owned and raced was a J/22. Even that was downgraded to my current race ride: a Laser. And I was content.

Paige Railey didn't get the medal she'd hoped for in the Laser Radial class, but she still has the Olympic bug and is already looking forward to 2016 in Rio.

Was the move to a different Trials a good one? Is the development pipeline working? Is there hope for 2016? Part II of our Olympic review looks at thes questions.

Below is part II of a post-regatta review of the U.S. Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider's performance at the 2012 Olympics. For Part I, please click here.

What about the Trials, should we go back to the old system?

An Olympic (Length) Review, Part I

by Stuart Streuli

U.S. Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider head coach Kenneth Andreasen (left) has a big job ahead of him trying to get the team to rebound from a medal shut out in Weymouth. Convincing talented young sailors like Women's 470 crew Sarah Lihan (right) to continue on the Olympic path will be crucial to the team's future success.

The closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics featured a phoenix rising as the Olympic flame was extinguished. Can the U.S. Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider treat the sailing regatta in a similar way, and pull the keys to a successful future from the ashes of a disaster? Here's a few thoughts.

The first step for anyone looking to find the reason behind the U.S. Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider’s dismal performance at the 2012 Olympics (no medals, just one top-five finish) is this: take a deep breath.

In fact, that’s probably steps two through 10 as well.

OK, with that out of the way, let’s move forward by looking at some of the most pressing questions hovering around this regatta.

Amanda Clark's Parting Thoughts

by Stuart Streuli

Head coach Kenneth Andreasen, Women's 470 crew Sarah Lihan, outgoing chair of US Sailing's Olympic Sailing Committee Dean Brenner, and two-time Olympian Amanda Clark put a close on the US Sailing Team's regatta on Friday when they pulled Clark and Lihan's 470 from the water.

With her Olympic career now in the rearview mirror, this two-time Olympian fires back at some of the team's critics.

Like this Olympic regatta, the medal race didn't go as planned for Amanda Clark and Sarah Lihan. The American 470 team was out of the medals, but in a position to move up a spot or two with a good race. They got caught on the wrong side of the first run (along with the British team that had a 50-50 shot at gold) and could never close the gap, finishing 10th in the race and ninth overall.
