Afternoon Tea, 2012 Olympics, Day 9

by Stuart Streuli

The Olympic regatta is dwindling quickly. Two more medal races today means there are only six fleets still racing. Tom Slingsby, of Australia, got redemption from four years ago when he went into the Olympics as the reigning Laser world champ and went home 22nd. He did what he had to do, held back Pavlos Kontides, of Cyprus, enough to ensure he couldn’t pass him in the overall standings. Kontides still got the first-ever Olympic medal for Cyprus. And at just 22, there’s probably more hardware down the road for this small island nation.

What Would You Have Done

by Stuart Streuli

Pieter-Jan Postma of the Netherlands had a bronze in his pocket, but gave it up to take a shot at gold in the medal race.

With a bronze in hand, PJ Postma went for the gold in the bush, and wound up with nothing.

Would you risk an Olympic medal for a shot at immortality?

With just a few hundred meters left in the Finn class medal race Pieter-Jan Postma of the Netherlands was comfortably in position for the bronze medal. But dangling just a boatlength ahead was the silver, possibly the gold. All he had to do was get inside of Daniel Slater of New Zealand for the final mark rounding before a short reach—a parade in almost any condition—to the finish.

Afternoon Tea, 2012 Olympics, Day 8

by Stuart Streuli

A pack house at the Nothe watched two very exciting medal races, with the British medals in both coming down to the last few meters. They were rewarded with a silver in the Star and a gold in Finn, the latter confirming Ben Ainslie as the most successful Olympic sailor in history.

A banner day for the British and for fans of sailing. But a tough one for the U.S. Sailing Team.

I kept telling the Brits that there is only one Super Sunday, and it occurs in February and involves about as far from a sailing regatta as a sporting event can get. But you try getting a word in when national heroes Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy are going for gold.

For the Brits it was a huge day and probably just how the organizers of the Weymouth Olympic Regatta drew it up many years ago, with two of their most well-known sailors fighting for Olympic gold on a beautiful summer Sunday on the south coast.

Amanda Clark and Sarah Lihan reach into the finish of Race 1 on Day 2 of their Olympic regatta.

The women's match racers and 470 team hold on to their medal hopes. For the rest of the U.S. team, however, it's about personal pride.

How’s this for an exciting set up for a medal race? The top four sailors in the Laser Radial class will enter the medal race on Monday in a virtual dead heat. Lijia Xu of China, Marit Bouvmeester of the Netherlands, Annalise Murphy of Ireland, and Evi Van Acker of Belgium have either 33 or 34 points after 10 races.
