The last race of the 2006 Lands' End Caribbean NOOD Championship began in a wacky manner typical of this highly unconventional regatta. At the signal of race manager Peter Reggio, crews emerged from belowdecks and scrambled to weigh anchor, hoist mainsails, unfurl jibs, and set a course for their final destination, Norman Island, B.V.I.Minutes before the start, the seven teams-who qualified for the championship by winning individual NOOD events in locations around the United States and Canada-busied themselves not with pre-race rituals, but with snorkeling amidst the coral formations at The Baths on Virgin Gorda. (In fact, when the final race began, Team Larchmont was still waiting on a few tardy bathers.)Richard Reid's team from Toronto, Canada, won the 2-hour race from Virgin Gorda to Norman Island by sailing a broad course through Sir Francis Drake Channel, keeping well clear of the wind shadows of Ginger, Cooper, Salt, and Peter Islands. Reid's victory secured third place in the regatta.John Stork, winner of the St. Petersburg, Fla., event, placed fourth in the race and first overall. At an informal awards ceremony held at The Pirates Lair on Norman Island, Stork complimented his competition-particularly Dale Marshall's second place team from Detroit-and credited his victory to his crew, which consisted of fellow Storks John, Jr., Eric, Bobby, and Kaitlin. Before heading to Willy T's floating nightclub for more celebration, the teams took turns signing a commemorative Sailing World flag, which will be displayed at future NOOD events.
