Scoring Alternatives

by The Editors

Time-on-Time: Each boat had a
Time Correction Factor (or coefficient) that is multiplied by the
boat's elapsed time to compute its corrected time; the boat with the
lowest corrected time wins. This system works particularly well in
regions where tide can speed up or slow down races.

Time-on-Distance: This is a
scoring system in which each boat's elapsed time has added to it the
product of the distance of the race and the boat's rating.

Performance Line: This system
has both elapsed time "A" factors and race distance "B" factors. It is
believed to work well in various wind conditions, but works poorly in
areas with tidal flow or in races in which the wind conditions change
during the race. It is more complicated to use than either time-on-time
or time-on-distance, but is simpler than IMS Performance Curve Scoring.
